In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Handale like this:
HANDALE, a place in Lofthouse parish, N. R. Yorkshire; 7½ miles E of Guisbrough. A small Benedictine nunnery was founded here, in 1133, by William Percy; had eight inmates at the dissolution; and was then given to Ambrose Beckwith.
