In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Woodcroft like this:

WOODCROFT, a hamlet in Etton parish, Northampton; 5½ miles NW of Peterborough. W. Castle dates from the 13th century; was garrisoned by Dr. Hudson for Charles I.; and is now the residence of J. Spencer, Esq.
