In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Brieryhurst like this:
BRIERYHURST, or Brerehurst, a township in Wolstanton parish, Stafford; adjacent to the Northwestern railway 2 miles NNE of Newcastle-under-Lyne. Real property, £5,157; of which £400 are in mines. Pop., 4,072. Houses, 798. The working of coal and iron-ore is carried on.
