In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Netherwood like this:

NETHERWOOD, a hamlet in Thornbury parish, Hereford; 4¼ miles N N W of Bromyard. Pop., 37. The estate belonged to the Mortimers; and passed, through the Baskervilles and others, to the Pytts. Roger Mortimer, of the 14th century, and Devereux, the favourite of Queen Elizabeth, were natives.
