In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Friezland like this:

FRIEZLAND, a chapelry in the parishes of Mottram and Rochdale, Lancashire and W. R. Yorkshire; at the backbone of England, near Greenfield r. station, 4½ miles W by S of Oldham. It was constituted in 1848; and its post town is Greenfield, under Manchester. Pop., 2, 191. Houses, 445. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Manchester. Value, £300.* Patron, R. R. Whitehead, Esq.
