In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Wentworth Castle like this:
WENTWORTH CASTLE, the seat of the Wentworth family in Stainbrough township, W. R. Yorkshire; 3 miles SSW of Barnsley. It was built, on the site of a previous castle, in 1730 and 1768, by the second and third Earls of Strafford; and is a splendid edifice, in the Grecian style.
