In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Waterhead like this:

WATERHEAD, a place at the head of Coniston-water, in Lancashire; ½ mile NE of Coniston. It has a good inn, and is a tourists' centre for the scenery around Coniston-water. W. House is the seat of J. G. Marshall, Esq.
