In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Rushyford like this:
RUSHYFORD, a hamlet in Auckland, St. Andrew parish, Durham; 5¼ miles E S E of Bishop-Auckland. Itis a seat of petty-sessions, and has a post-office under Ferryhill. A famous inn was here before the railway period; was the place where Lord Eldon passed much ofhis vacations in his latter years; and is now a farm-house.
Rushyford is now part of COUNTY DURHAM Unitary Authority. Click here for graphs and data of how COUNTY DURHAM has changed over two centuries. For statistics about Rushyford itself, go to Statistics.
