In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Middlestown like this:
MIDDLESTOWN, a village in Shitlington township, Thornhill parish, W. R. Yorkshire; near the river C alder, 3 miles SE by S of Dewsbury. It has a post office under Wakefield.
