In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Rayrigg like this:
RAYRIGG, a baylet and an old mansion, in Westmoreland; on the E side of Windermere, ¾ of a mile N of Bowness. The mansion was occupied, for some time, by the celebrated W. Wilberforce; and become afterwards the seat of Lieut.-Col. Jacob.
