In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described South Chard like this:
CHARD (South), a tything in Chard parish, Somerset; 2 miles S by E of Chard. It includes the hamlet of Chilson, and part of the hamlet of Perry-street; and has a post office under Chard. Pop., 471.
