In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Broadhurst like this:
Broadhurst, hamlet, in par. and 1½ mile N. of Horsted-Keynes, E. Sussex; here Archhishop Leighton, primate of Glasgow (1613-1684), resided for ten years after his resignation of his mitre.
