In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Blackhill like this:
BLACKHILL, a village in Lanchester parish, Durham; 1 mile W of Shotley-Bridge. It has a post office under Gateshead, a large saw-mill, a large forge, two Methodist chapels, and a Roman Catholic chapel.
Blackhill is now part of COUNTY DURHAM Unitary Authority. Click here for graphs and data of how COUNTY DURHAM has changed over two centuries. For statistics about Blackhill itself, go to Statistics.
