In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Port Clarence like this:

Port Clarence, small port with ry. sta., Durham, at N. side of mouth of the Tees, 9 miles S. of Hartlepool by rail and 4 miles NE. of Stockton; P.O., T.O.; is a port for the shipping of coal, and is rapidly becoming a place of importance. Middlesbrough is reached by means of a ferry across the Tees.
