In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Selaby Park like this:
SELABY PARK, a seat in Gainford parish, Durham; on the river Tees, 6½ miles E of Barnard-Castle. It occupies the site of an ancient monastery; belonged forages to the Brackenburys, one of whom was slain at Bosworth Field; and belongs now to the Duke of Cleveland.
