In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Applethwaite like this:
APPLETHWAITE, a village on the ascent of Skiddaw, 2 miles N of Keswick, Cumberland. It commands a brilliant view of Derwentwater and the encincturing mountains. A small property adjacent to it was given by Sir George Beaumont to the poet Wordsworth.
Applethwaite is now part of CUMBERLAND Unitary Authority. Click here for graphs and data of how CUMBERLAND has changed over two centuries. For statistics about Applethwaite itself, go to Statistics.
