In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Petteril like this:
PETTERIL (The), a river of Cumberland. It rises in two head-streams, in Greystoke Park and in the vicinity of Penruddock; runs 5½ miles north-eastward to a point2¾ miles N by W of Penrith; goes thence, 16 miles north-north-westward, to a confluence with the Eden at Carlisle; and is closely followed, over all these 16 miles, by the Lancaster and Carlisle railway .
Petteril is now part of WESTMORLAND AND FURNESS Unitary Authority. Click here for graphs and data of how WESTMORLAND AND FURNESS has changed over two centuries. For statistics about Petteril itself, go to Statistics.
