In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Rosley like this:

ROSLEY, a township, with a village, in Westward parish, Cumberland; 5 miles E S E of Wigton. A stockfair is held on Whit-Monday, and every fortnight after, till 29 Sept. Pop., 252. Houses, 45.
