In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Rosthwaite like this:
Rosthwaite, vil., Crosthwaite par., Cumberland, in Borrowdale, 6 miles S. of Keswick, near Borrowdale church; P.O.; is situated amid grand scenery, and is a favourite centre for mountain excursions.
