In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Santon like this:
Santon.-- hamlet, Irton par., Cumberland, on river Irt, 4½ miles NE. of Ravenglass; the river is here crossed by Santon Bridge, where there is an inn. See IRTON, SANTON AND MELTHWAITE.
