In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Scales like this:
SCALES, a hamlet under Saddleback mountain, in Cumberland; 5½ miles N E by E of Keswick. S. Tarnlies about a mile to the N N W; and is overhung allround, except on part of the N, by dark, lofty, precipitous crags.
