In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Solway Moss like this:
Solway Moss, tract, Kirk Andrews upon Esk par., Cumberland, 7 miles in circumference and lying W. of Longtown, on the Border; here the Scottish army under James V. was defeated by the English in 1542.
