In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Whatstandwell like this:
WHATSTANDWELL-BRIDGE, a place in Crich parish, Derbyshire; on the river Derwent, and on the Ambergate and Buxton railway, 5 miles N by W of Belper. It has a post-office under Derby and a r. station.
