In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Underwood like this:
UNDERWOOD, a village in Plympton-St. Mary parish, Devon; 4½ miles NE of Plymouth. It contains Plympton workhouse, and has a fair on 5 July.
