In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Pontop like this:
Pontop, vil., Lanchester par., Durham, under Pontop Pike, 10 miles SW. of Gateshead; in vicinity is Pontop Hall, seat; Pontop Pike is a hill 1018 ft. in height.
