In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Newton like this:
NEWTON, a township, conjoint with Walford and Letton, in Leintwardine parish, Hereford; near the boundary with Wales, 5½ miles N E of Presteigne.
