In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Cresswell like this:
CRESSWELL, a village in Draycott-in-the-Moors parish, Stafford; on the Stoke and Uttoxeter railway, 7½ miles SE of Stoke. Is has a station on the railway.
