In 1882-4, Frances Groome's Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland described Skibo like this:

Skibo Castle, a modern mansion in Dornoch parish, Sutherland, 4 miles W by S of the town. Purchased in 1872 for £130,000, and greatly improved since then, the estate belongs to Evan Charles Sutherland, Esq. (b. 1835), who holds 20, 000 acres in the shire, valued at £4194 per annum.—Ord. Sur., sh. 94, 1878.
