In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Tanner like this:
Tanner, Water of, Aberdeenshire; rises at a point 6 miles S. of Ballater, and flows 12 miles NE. through Glen Tanner to river Dee, a little above Aboyne.
