In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Inverlochy like this:
Inverlochy Castle, ruin, Kilmonivaig par., SW. Inverness-shire, on river Lochy, near its influx to Loch Linnhe, 1½ mile NE. of Fort William; is traditionally a royal Pictish seat; the battle of Inverlochy, in which Montrose defeated Argyll, was fought 2d February 1645; 3 miles NE. of Fort William is the modern Inverlochy Castle, seat of Lord Abinger.
