In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Dounreay like this:
Dounreay, hamlet, in par. and 2 miles NE. of Reay, N. Caithness-shire; in vicinity are the ruins of Dounreay Castle, ancient seat of the Reays.
