In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Eliock like this:
Eliock House, on Eliock Burn, in par. and 1½ mile SE. of Sanquhar, NW. Dumfries-shire; birthplace of "the Admirable Crichton" (1560-1583).
