In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Deveron like this:

Deveron, river, Aberdeenshire and Banffshire; rises among the mountains of Cabrach, flows NE., receiving the Blackwater, the Bogie, and the Isla, and falls into the sea between Banff and Macduff; is 61 miles long, and is well stocked with salmon and trout.
