In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Carleton like this:
CARLETON, a hamlet in Penrith parish, Cumberland; on the river Eamont, 1 mile SSE of Penrith. Pop., 81. Carleton Hall was formerly the seat of the Carletons; and belongs now to the Cowpers.
Carleton is now part of WESTMORLAND AND FURNESS Unitary Authority. Click here for graphs and data of how WESTMORLAND AND FURNESS has changed over two centuries. For statistics about Carleton itself, go to Statistics.
