In 1882-4, Frances Groome's Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland described Firkin like this:
Farkin or Firkin, a small bay and a small headland in Arrochar parish, Dumbartonshire, on the W side of Loch Lomond, 1¾ mile NNW of Rowardennan Ferry.
