In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Philiphaugh like this:
Philiphaugh, seat, in co. and 3 miles SW. of Selkirk, on Yarrow Water; a plain in the vicinity was the scene of Sir David Leslie's victory over the Marquis of Montrose in 1645.
