In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Hopetoun like this:
Hopetoun House, seat of the Earl of Hopetoun (1702), Abercorn par., Linlitlngowshire, on Firth of Forth, 3 miles W. of South Queensferry; the park contains sonne very fine trees.
