In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Hythe like this:
HYTHE, a hamlet in Essex; on the river Colne, adjacent to the Wivenhoe railway, 1 mile. SSE of Colchester. It has a station on the railway, and a post office under Colchester.
Hythe is now part of COLCHESTER District. Click here for graphs and data of how COLCHESTER has changed over two centuries. For statistics about Hythe itself, go to Statistics.
