In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Navan like this:
Navan, market town, township, and par., with ry. sta., mid. co. Meath, at the confluence of rivers Blackwater and Boyne, 16 ½ miles SW. of Drogheda and 31 miles NW. of Dublin - par., 3344 ac., pop. 4179; township, 455 ac., pop. 3873; P.O., T.O., 3 Banks. Market-day, Wednesday. Navan has a woollen factory and several flour mills, and is situated in a fertile district.
