In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Elphin like this:

Elphin, town and par., mid. co. Roscommon, 9 miles SW. of Carrick-on-Shannon ry. sta.-- town, pop. 997; par., 12,554 ac., pop. 3487; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks.Market-day, Wednesday; formerly an episcopal town; the cathedral is now the par. church. Elphin has a good market for corn and butter.
