In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Castledermot like this:

Castledermot, town and par., S. co. Kildare, on river Lerr, 4 miles E. of Mageney ry. sta. and 9 miles SE. of Athy -- par., 7490 ac., pop. 1505; town, pop. 675; P.O., T.O.; a round tower, several sculptured crosses, and the remains of a monastery, are here.
