In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Lea like this:

Lea (or Ley), par., N. Queen's co., on Grand Canal and river Barrow, 18,488 ac., pop. 4838; contains Portarlington and ruins of a castle built in 1260 and destroyed by Cromwell's army.
