In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Ormond like this:

Ormond, Lower and Upper, 2 bars., N. co. Tipperary - Lower Ormond, 127,222 ac., pop. 20,077; Upper Ormond, 79,741 ac., pop. 10,518. Upper Ormond gives the title of Marquis of Ormonde to the Butlers.
