In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Clare like this:

Clare, town with ry. sta., Clareabbey par., mid. co. Clare, on river Fergus, 2 miles SE. of Ennis and 23 miles NW. of Limerick, pop. 790; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank.
