In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Hook like this:
Hook, par., S. co. Wexford, on Waterford Harbour, 3 miles S. of Fethard, on a narrow peninsula terminating in Hook Head, 1065 ac., pop. 371; on Hook Head (or Point), at E. side of entrance to Waterford Harbour, is a lighthouse 115 ft. high, with fixed light (Waterford) 152 ft. above high water and seen 16 miles.
