In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Inisheer like this:

Inisheer, island (forming par.), one of the Aran group, SW. co. Galway, 17 miles SW. of Spiddal, 1400 ac., pop. 497; P.O., called Inishere; Inisheer Lighthouse, on south point of island, is 112 ft. high, with fixed light (Inisheer island) 110 ft. above high water and seen 15 miles.
