In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Askerton like this:
ASKERTON, a township in Lanercost parish, Cumberland; on an affluent of the river Irthing, 6 miles NNE of Brampton. Real property, £3,914. Pop., 380. Houses, 68. Berethen Castle here was built by the Dacres, who derived their name from the exploits of one of their ancestors at the siege of Acre under Richard Cœur de Lion; and was, at one time, garrisoned for the Crown against the Scots.
Askerton is now part of CUMBERLAND Unitary Authority. Click here for graphs and data of how CUMBERLAND has changed over two centuries. For statistics about Askerton itself, go to Statistics.
