Kildare, County Kildare

In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Kildare like this:

Kildare, market town, par., and capital of co. Kildare, 30 miles SW. of Dublin by rail - par., 9209 ac., pop. 2091; town, pop. 1174; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. Market-day, Thursday. The town, which is partly the property of the Duke of Leinster, has but little trade. The ancient cathedral has been restored. There is an interesting antiquity, called the Pillar-Tower of Kildare, 108 ft. high. Near the town is the celebrated Curragh Common, where horse races are held four times a year, and on which a permanent military camp is established.
