In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Lurgan like this:
Lurgan.-- town with ry. sta., Shankill par., N. co. Armagh, 20 miles SW. of Belfast and 93 miles N. of Dublin, 851 ac., pop. 10,135; 3 Banks, 1 newspaper. Market-days, Thursday and Saturday. It is situated about 3 miles S. of Lough Neagh, and in a populous and fertile district. The linen and muslin mfr., chiefly in cambrics, lawns, diapers, and damasks, is extensively carried on. Lurgan gives the title of baron to the Brownlow family, whose seat of Brownlow House is in the vicinity.
