In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Ballyshannon like this:
Ballyshannon.-- market and seaport town, in pars. of Kilbarron and Inishmacsaint, S. co. Donegal, at mouth of river Erne, 128 m. W. of Belfast and 157 m. NW. of Dublin by rail -- township, 759 ac., pop. 2840; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks, 1 newspaper. Market-days, Tues. and Satur. It has an important salmon fishery. Before entering the harbour, which is a creek of Donegal Bay, the Erne makes a splendid cataract.
